Force Science Analyst | Critical Incident Consultant

Dustan Barrett is a Force Science Analyst and critical incident consultant specializing in use of force analysis, officer-involved shooting review, and decision-making evaluation in police-practice litigation.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Mr. Barrett is an active CID Sergeant with the Mesquite Police Department, where he has served since 2008. Over 17 years, he has held positions across patrol operations, criminal investigations, major crimes, special crimes, property crimes, jail operations, and crisis negotiation.

Currently serving as CID Sergeant – Major Crimes (present), Mr. Barrett oversees investigations of homicides, officer-involved shootings, aggravated assaults, robberies, and public integrity cases. He previously supervised special crimes investigations (2024–2025) and worked as a detective in major crimes (2018–2022), where he served as lead investigator in two officer-involved shootings and contributed to ten additional OIS investigations.

FORCE SCIENCE TRAINING

Mr. Barrett is a certified Force Science Analyst, trained in human performance under stress, perception and memory limitations, officer decision-making, and action-reaction dynamics. This specialized training informs his analytical approach to critical incident review and litigation support.

INVESTIGATIVE EXPERIENCE

- Lead detective or Team Member: Several officer-involved shootings

- Lead detective: Multiple homicide investigations

- Lead detective: Murder of police K-9

- Extensive experience in use of force review and decision-point analysis

EXPERT WITNESS EXPERIENCE

He has testified in numerous criminal proceedings involving homicide, aggravated robbery, sexual assault, and major crimes, demonstrating the ability to explain complex investigative and human performance concepts clearly to judges and juries.
